About Cella:

Cella is a venture-backed climate tech company developing in-situ CO₂ mineralization projects to deliver safe, permanent carbon removal at gigaton scale. We are currently executing our first field pilot in Kenya. Our mission is to unlock the full potential of geologic carbon storage by creating a technology that leverages proven solutions for unconventional rock types. We’re a small, fast-moving team with deep technical expertise, now building out our commercial capabilities to scale up deployments across key geographies and industries.

Role Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Reservoir Engineer to play a key role in our pioneering carbon storage project. In this role, you will be instrumental in identifying, characterizing, and monitoring subsurface formations suitable for the long-term and secure storage of carbon dioxide (CO₂). The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in reservoir engineering within geologic storage settings, with demonstrated knowledge and experience in reservoir modeling, geomechanics, CO₂ plume migration, and monitoring strategies. A solid understanding of geological engineering, Fluid mechanics and reservoir characterization is essential, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure the safe, efficient, and sustainable implementation of carbon storage solutions—contributing directly to climate change

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate and characterize subsurface reservoirs for safe CO₂ storage, including caprock integrity and storage capacity.
  2. Execute reservoir simulations to model CO₂ injection behavior, plume migration, long-term containment, and predict reservoir response over time.
  3. Support site selection by analyzing geological, petrophysical, and geomechanical datasets to assess suitability for storage.
  4. Interpret downhole data and assess key reservoir properties such as permeability, injectivity, and hydrologic behavior, while developing dynamic models for site evaluation and reservoir management.
  5. Collaborate closely with geologists, geoscientists, engineers, and environmental teams to formulate and implement integrated storage strategies, leveraging multidisciplinary data to build robust conceptual models.
  6. Oversee field data acquisition and interpretation, and provide technical support during drilling, well construction, and CO₂ injection operations.
  7. Lead planning and execution of reservoir engineering activities, offering technical direction and mentorship to team members as needed.
  8. Identify and assess risks related to CO₂ injection and long-term storage, and design appropriate risk mitigation strategies to ensure operational safety and integrity.
  9. Contribute to the development of injection and monitoring plans and support permitting and regulatory compliance processes.
  10. Prepare detailed technical documentation and deliver presentations on research findings and project outcomes for both internal stakeholders and external partners

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Geoscience, or related field. Master’s Degree or Specialized Training in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is an added advantage
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in Reservoir engineering, preferably with exposure to CO₂ phase behavior, Geomechanics, fluid flow in porous media, and geochemical interactions.

Technical skills

  • Proficiency in data analysis and reservoir simulation softwares (e.g., Eclipse, CMG, TOUGH2, Petrel) and data interpretation tools.
  • Ability to work effectively in a potentially remote or field-based environment as needed.
  • Proficiency in interpreting geoscientific data using industry-standard software and experience with well log analysis.
  • Knowledge of CO2 injection and storage processes and associated risks is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with monitoring technologies (e.g., seismic surveys, well logging) and regulatory compliance for carbon storage projects ensures safety and project success.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and innovation in sustainable energy.

Additional Soft Skills

  • Analytical thinking, problem-solving, report-writing skills and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a  dynamic and multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to handle timelines, budgets and field logistics
